Our story

The Begining

The history of the clinic in the 190m2-house at Rua Padre Anchieta and a space of 130m2 at the Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças started when Paulo Rogerio Mudrovitsch de Bittencourt and Paulo Roberto Miranda Sandoval, arriving from London and Rio de Janeiro, opened the clinic in April 1982 with a reception lounge at the front and the offices in the back, the rest of the house was empty. Soon after, several doctors also back home after post-graduations such as Leo Cardon, Ricardo R. Stevens, Richard C R Moreira, Julio C U Coelho, Paulo R F Rossi, Ruth Graf and Anthonio J S Golden opened their offices. The neurologists Ana Marlene Gorz and Ana Cristina Gabardo also settled there. The garage and the laundry room were refurbished for the physiotherapist Lucymara Silva. In this period, when the entrepreneurial keynote was diversification, the clinic was the Centre for Diagnosis of Curitiba SC Ltd. Soon the Day-Clinic for Rehabilitation of Curitiba, the Physiotherapy Unit, the Psychology Unit and the Neurology Unit opened so as to support the fast growth. In 1985, MEC credited the fellowship in Neurology and neuropsychological testing started through the hands of Mônica Bigarella, Maribel P. Doro and Maria Joana Mäder at the Hospital and in 1987 a small EEG lab opened.

In 1948, the couple Mateus Mudrovitsh, Croatian, and his wife Bertha Weinsky, German, with loans from the Caixa Economica Federal built their 190m2-home at Rua Padre Anchieta 155 in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil, where Dr. Paulo Rogerio M de Bittencourt is untill today practicing Medicine.

Dr. Paulo Rogerio M de Bittencourt’s family house together with an area of 130m2 in the Hospital Nossa Senhora Das Graças in 1982 accommodated him returning from London and his colleagues who returned from post-graduations: Paulo Roberto Miranda Sandoval, coming from Rio de Janeiro, Léo Cardon, Ricardo R Stevens, Richard C R Moreira, Julio C U Coelho, Paulo R F Rossi, Ruth Graf and Anthony J S Golden, the neurologists Ana Marlene Gorz and Ana Cristina Gabardo, and the physiotherapist Lucymara Silva. The aim was to diversify and all these professionals from different specialties were the Center of Diagnosis of Curitiba SC Ltd.

Refurbishing without an Architect

In 1988 there was a structural change in the house first built in 1948 with a loan from the Caixa Economica Federal by Croatian Mateus and his German wife Bertha Weinsky. We changed part of the floor, windows, doors, divided the bathroom and kitchen, new decor and a new office for Dr. Bittencourt. Soon after, Coelho, Moreira, Rossi, Graf, Golden, Silva and Cardon settled in specialized clinics or their own  clinics and the neurologists from the UNC looked after the house. In 1991 there were Bittencourt, Cleverson M Garcia, Thereza C Winckler, Peter A Kowacs, the neurophysiologist Ricardo R Stevens and his wife Alaides. Between 1992 and 1993 all left and Bittencourt started a new team of neurologists and neurophysiologists with Paulo J M Leite, Marcos C Sandmann, Milton M de Bittencourt Jr, Edson R Piana and Eduardo Hümmelgen. At the same time, UNC shares in other clinics were either sold or closed thus concentrating in neurology and neurophysiology, in special the central nervous system. In 94/95 the parking lot was built and a broad program to purchase digital neurophysiological equipment took place so as to make the most comprehensive laboratory of electroencephalography in Brazil in 1996, including the first sleep lab in the state of Paraná. Digital systems to support diagnosis were installed and literature reviewed to complement the extensive library. In 1997, Leite moved to his private office and the speech therapist Rosana Lenzi and the psychologist Jane M Ferraz began to run tests of neuropsychology at Padre Anchieta. At the same time, boosting the business, visual support material was created and the license for a clinic was taken and the company registered at the Regional Council of Medicine.

A new clinic for Curitiba in 2000

In 1997, Bittencourt bought the house from his mother Udine, daughter of the couple who built it, and started to turn the establishment into an elegant clinic, practical and comfortable. With modern technology and new material, many of which imported, the offices were refurbished, a suite for Electroencephalography and an office for Neuropsychology were built. In March 2001, with 10 air-conditioners, 11 computers, 3 bathrooms, waiting room and VIP room, the clinic could run up to 10 simultaneous consultations with the secretary / telephone operator / receptionist Denise, the manager and director Maristela, the maintenance worker Maria, the nurses / EEG  technitians Teresa, Denise and Patricia. Through reports, computerized administration and secretary, 7 land lines plus one for fax and e-mail, the clinic improved the quality of life of clients and service providers.

Health Project

Between August and November 1998, three professionals with initiative, willingness to develop new projects and fluency in English: Priscilla Campos, Maria Paula da Silva and Sheila Tanaka, were hired and trained so as to, under the supervision of Dr. Paulo R. M. de Bittencourt, start the Health Project, aiming to provide modern and scientific clinical care as well as an ethical treatment for obesity, fibromyalgia and pain. Aiming to improve health instead of just treating diseases, this group went into its own offices in November 1999, becoming an important part of clinic at the turn of the millennium.

The Clinic in the year 2003

The steady development required a continuous improvement in the facilities. In the second half of 2001, a large room was refurbished for a lab so as to enable simultaneous clinical examinations.

With the constant introduction of new methods of diagnosis and treatment which were often pioneers in the continent and with more than 250 publications, more than 350 participations in scientific events and the organization of more than 50 scientific events, most of which international, the UNC team always looked for the excellence clients demanded and to meet the challenges that motivate the team.

Major changes: 2003-2007

From 2003 on, the clinic had to incorporate quickly the changes caused by major crises and advances in Medicine that took place in Curitiba, the world and Brazil. First came the essence of Medicine: appointments, which became increasingly less valued, being it in the general public point of view or through payments, generally responsibility of health insurances. Examinations and reports became much better paid and highly taken into consideration. At the same time, a paradigm: the demand for neurological consults increased, perhaps because of the decreased number of doctors willing to perform them. Then, for the first time, the more expensive  appointment in the clinic and in the city of Curitiba was above the historically charged US$100, or a minimum wage, reaching US$170, nevertheless, below the price charged in London, for example, which is more than US$1,000, or in São Paulo, about R$1,000.

The Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças, for more than 20 years the basis for the clinic performance, no longer had fellowships, internships for students, study centers, research groups and scientific interest. Everything just collapsed between 2004 and 2005, similar to what happened in most hospitals that worked for SUS all over the country - the so called charity. Major hospitals in Curitiba were replaced by small clinics, more efficient from a financial perspective, prepared to perform surgical procedures and diagnoses.

Unexpectedly, the UNINEURO became a controversial national and international phenomenon, even more than it had already become through its history, with the advent of pre-transplant and the high-dose chemotherapy for Multiple Sclerosis and Immune Disorders. In 2005 and 2006, we began to play a worldwide leading role in this field. Although not totally unexpected, as it was the natural development of a work that started 20 years ago, it was a surprise to those who did not follow our work closely.

Fortunately, for us it was not unexpected so that a big refurbish in the clinic, already planned for several years, was held in the second half of 2005 and so we could accommodate the patients that came because of this. But it was not easy, because there resulted consequences of a structural, functional, conceptual, even legal and financial point of view. The clinic increased in almost 100%, a total change in the classical appearance the house had, the main offices, health permits and broader agreements with health insurances. Everything, once again, with our procedures being in a cutting-edge level, the first in the country, in many cases the first in the world. Very nice, but difficult through an operational and financial point of view. Mainly because the increased number of patients happened at a time when we nomore had the support of the massive structure we ourselves had built over 20 years of work in the Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças. A structure that was ours and we tried to take it to the clinic. But, it was like switching from a horse to another or from a horse to a kangaroo. Although we knew that the hospital was heading towards this crisis, the fall is never completely predictable.

Accommodating a whole new reality of concepts, ethics, finances, physical and functional structure, new people, new equipment, new partnerships, new health insurance partnerships, new computers, digital files, everything new, stretched several times to the limit the capabilities of all involved over these 4 or 5 years. Certainly, most of our colleagues in Curitiba and in other cities in Brazil felt the same, and those who did not, will not keep on Neurology with the performance expected in the twenty-first century.

UNINEURO - 2010

After the structural change in 2005, a complete re-structure of the site www.unineuro.com.br took place. The now 400m2-clinic is in a calm and very central part of town with its own parking lot and air-conditioned environment. Between 2007 and 2008 a new change in the appearance was made and in the new facilities the clinic is ready for us to reach our goals. There are now two waiting rooms, three offices, two psychotherapy rooms, three video-EEG and PSG rooms, a physiotherapy room, three bathrooms, a laundry,  a waste treatment room, 10 parking spaces, plus a full chemotherapy and infusion room, all duly accredited by the relevant authorities. In the house there is an efficient security system, which has not allowed any kind of problems since it has been on.
We are now two adult neurologists, a pediatric neurologist, a psychiatrist, two pediatric and two adults psychologists, a psychologist running tests on cognitive function, two technitians in neurophysiology and 4 administrative and reception staff.
